Sikkim is dependent on tourism and agriculture to sustain its economy. Being right at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, the state is visited by tourists who come here to witness the grandeur of the mountains. Kunchenjunga, which is the third highest peak in the Himalayas, is located in Sikkim. Apart from this, the state boasts of 28 mountain peaks, more than 80 glaciers, innumerable rivers and streams, five hot springs, and many high altitude lakes. The Tsongmo, Gurudongmar and Khecheopalri are the most famous and beautiful lakes in the state. Sikkim has eight mountain passes which link it to Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal. Sikkim is one the northern most states of the country and is located at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the second smallest state of the country and one of the least populated states. The state is known for its scenic landscape and breathtaking natural views. Gangtok is the state capital and is one of the most beautiful and popular hill stations. The Himalayan mountain range surrounds the northern, eastern and western borders of Sikkim. The state of Sikkim is bordered by Nepal on the west, China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and east, and the state of West Bengal on the south. The small country of Bhutan lies to the southeast of Sikkim. The state is known for its hilly terrain and its diverse natural beauty. Gangtok which is the capital as well as the largest city of the state is known for its panoramic views and Buddhist monasteries. It is believed that the state got its name from a palace built by the state's first ruler, Phuntsog Namgyal. In the Hindu scriptures, Sikkim is referred to as Indrakil. The different local tribes and communities have different names by which they refer to the state. Nepali people form the major chunk of the population, and majority of the people here belong to either Hindu or Buddhist fate.There are more than 70 monasteries in the state. Located at an ecological hotspot of the Himalayas, Sikkim is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The state has an amazing variety of trees and plans with more than 5000 flowering plants. It is known for its arthropods and butterflies, and the state it home to more than 695 varieties of butterflies. Sikkim is one of the few states in India which receives regular snowfall during winter. The northern part of the state experiences tundra-type climate and is covered by snow for the four winter months when temperature falls below 0 °C.
