Known for its picturesque beauty, Ladakh is also popularly called “the Moon land” or “the Last Shangri La”. Ladakh is situated in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, and is one of the most popular destinations fun, adventure, nature, peace, photography and more. Ladakh is located between Kunlun mountain range in the north and Majestic Himalayas to the south; it is also the highest plateau of the Indian state of Kashmir with much of it being over 3,000 meters. Ladakh is also known as “the Little Tibet” as it has a lot in common with the Tibetan culture. Leh, the capital of Ladakh is the largest town in the region and is one of the very few Buddhist abodes in Sothern Asia. The majority of the population is Tibetan Buddhist and the rest are Shia Muslims. Ladakh has a great diversity of birds with around 225 species recorded. Some of the birds like finches, robins, hoopoe and redstarts are common in summer. Also one could see Ruddy Sheldrake, rare Black-necked crane, Ravel and golden eagle. Amongst the animals, Kiang (Tibetan ass) is common in grass land of Changthang. Also there are snow leopards, Eurasian lynx, the Tibetan wolf, brown bears, Tibetan sand fox and more. Leh offers the most breath-taking views, with snow covered mountains surrounding it. Beautiful desert spread over miles to the crystal clear lake. Some of the places worth visiting in Ladakh are Nubra Valley, Zanskar Valley, Drogpas the Aryan, Pangon Lake, Tsmoriri Lake and Tsokar. One could also visit the monastery like Thikey Monastery, Shanti Stupa, and Lamayuru Monastery amongst the many in Ladakh. In the olden days, Ladakh was a very crucial trade route due to its strategic location, until Chinese authorities sealed the border with Tibet and central Asia in the 60s. Major part of the economy is sustained by Indian Army, tourism and civilian government in the form of jobs and extensive subsidies. The Ladakhis developed a small-scale farming system adapted to the environment with less water. Principal crops are barley and wheat. Ladakh is well connected by road as well as air. The state transport buses travel from Srinagar and Manali on the road to Leh which is open for traffic from mid-June to early October. One can also hire taxis from Srinagar or Manali to reach Leh. An alternate is to go on bikes via Delhi or Manali for a great adventure. Leh is also well connected with Leh and Jammu with multiple airlines operating on the daily basis. There are only 2 seasons in Ladakh, winter and summer. Winter starts in October and goes up to May with temperature dropping way below zero making it almost impossible to visit. The best time to visit is the summer which starts in June and goes up to September. Ladakh is open for tourists only during the months from June to September. For More Info: Ladakh and Ladakh Hotels
