The largest state in India, Rajasthan lies in the northwest part of the country. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the country owing to its unique culture and tradition, and there are many important tourist places in the state. Jaipur is the capital city, and a large section of the state is covered by the Thar Desert. Rajasthan is bordered on the west by Pakistan. Gujarat lies to the southwest, Madhya Pradesh to the southeast, Punjab to the north, and Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to the northeast. The Aravalli Range runs from southwest to northeast for more than 850 km. The famous hill station Mount Abu is located here. The state of Rajasthan was formed in 30 March 1949, before which it was known as Rajputana, which was a collection of princely states ruled by the Rajputs. The state is famous for its vast forts, intricately designed temples and decorated havelis, which are fine examples of Rajput architecture. Cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Jaisalmer are just some of the well known places in Rajasthan which are frequented by tourists from within the country as well as abroad. Some of the famous monuments of Rajasthan including Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, Dilwara Temples in Mount Abu, Chittorgarh Fort, white marble Bara-dari on the Anasagar Lake of Ajmer, Lake Palace, miniature paintings in Bundi, Bhandasar and Karni Mata Temple of Bikaner, Ranakpur Temple dedicated to Lord Adinath in Pali District, the fort complexes in Chittor, Jaisalmer and Kumbhalgarh, many amazing Jain temples, and numerous city palaces and havelis. Rajasthan has a number of wildlife sanctuaries including famous Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, which is known for its bird life. Ranthambore and Sariska Tiger Reserve are two famous tiger reserves in the state. The Desert National Park in Jaisalmer is fine example of the ecosystem of Thar Desert. Rajasthan is known for its rich culture which finds expression in its music, art and fabric. The block prints, tie and dye prints, Bagaru prints, Sanganer prints, Zari embroidery, and the different handicrafts are extremely popular and major export products from Rajasthan. The traditional folk music, and the Ghoomar dance from Udaipur and Kalbeliya dance of Jaisalmer draw audience from world over. Rajasthan is mainly dependent on agriculture, tourism, daily farming, export of art and craft to sustain its economy. The state also has quite a few industries. It is well connected by road, railway and air. The best time to visit Rajasthan is during the winter months as summer tends to be extremely hot in the state.
