“From the students who participate in the Executive work placement program to the employees we have hired through the school, we are proud to be associated with Centennial College’s Office Administration program,” says David Lipton, president of Sensors Quality Management. Lipton is just one of the many employers associated with the office administration program at Centennial College, which sees students going into the field on a work placement during their two-year program and training to become administrative assistants, administrative support officers, senior secretaries and executive secretaries. These office administrator positions are available in sectors such as: education, corporate, insurance, financial, government or small business. In order to apply for the office administration course, students must be able to present at least an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or are 19 years of age or older. In addition, they must also have the English 12C or U credit or a skills assessment or equivalent. Please note that being able meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into this program. Once students have been accepted, they will spend two years learning how to handle the multiple functions performed by administrative assistants who work with upper-level management. Program topics cover full-range of office and business skills to hone your skills as an office administrator schools. It includes topics like extensive software skills, Internet research abilities, presentation preparation, taking minutes of meetings, composing business correspondence and arranging national and international conferences. Emphasis is placed on developing document production, note-taking and related computer skills. Students will also concentrate on client service, communication, time management and supervisory skills. Some of the specific courses within the office administration training include: Transcription Techniques (provides a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of business English, while helping students to develop competence in proofreading, editing and transcribing common forms of business correspondence); Financial Procedures (students gain familiarity with many financial documents that they will encounter in business, and learn how a spreadsheet can facilitate their preparation); Procedures for Managing Projects (provides realistic, practical, and meaningful experiences to strengthen students’ administrative skills and knowledge of executive office procedures); and more. As previously mentioned, to supplement in-school learning, students participate in an office administrator field placement during their last semester. Students spend two days a week working in a business setting related to their area of specialization (executive, legal, or medical). To graduate from the Office Administration program, students must achieve a minimum C grade average and an overall minimum GPA of 2.0 as well as a minimum keyboarding speed of 40 words per minute. Once students complete their studies, they have two options. First, they can continue with their education in an articulated program with selected universities, institutes, and professional associations. These partnerships allow graduates to apply academic credit towards further study. Secondly, they can enter the workforce.
