Flame Retardants find use in modern days as an effective measure to prevent fire from spreading easily. It has been made compulsory for the flat builders and the maintenance department of buildings, schools and hospitals to keep flame retardants inside the campus. To save life and property, nothing is friendlier than a flame retardant. There are a variety of flame retardants available in the market. They differ in the additives they contain. Flame retardant additives should be able to solve the purpose they are used for. Brominated flame retardants are known for their performance, cost, properties and the way they can be processed. But their constant use leads to some problems. This has prompted the Government and other statutory bodies to issue rules and regulations which prohibit the excessive use of the halogen additives. They encourage the use of halogen free flame retardant. The consumers also prefer environment friendly materials to the excessive use of brominated and chlorinated additives. The houses contain many flammable materials which not only catch fire easily but also help the fire spread fast. Some of the materials are so dangerously flammable that the fire incidents in houses are dangerous and destroy everything before anything is realized. There are plastics which catch fire easily. So the retardants have to be far more effective than before. Phosphorus based additives are also growing in demand. Additives like magnesium hydroxide find increased use in polypropylene and engineering resins. Alumina trihydrate is the largest volume flame retardant. The market researchers are predicting the fast growth of polyolefins and other thermoplastics which are used in FR construction and electronics applications. There are other additives like PVC, polystyrene and epoxy resins. There are many directives regarding the proper usage of flame retardant additives. The new PP grades are formulated to combine both toughness and chemical resistance. They also have the properties of low moisture absorption and improved mechanical and impact properties. These additives are a effective return on investment, replacing the conventional ones with no tooling rework or performance failures.
