Kanpur is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is considered an important town due to its historical, religious and commercial significance. Kanpur is a prominent industrial centre of India as well. The history of Kanpur dates back to the period of the Mahabharata. According to the epic, Kanpur was the territory that was gifted to Karna by Duryodhana. The city was initially known as Karnapur, 'the land of Karna'. Later it came to be known as Kanpur. Kanpur had played a very major role in the First War of Independence in 1857. The first sounds of the sepoy mutiny were first heard in Kanpur, that later spread to the rest of the India. The freedom struggle in the first half of the twentieth century, the First War of Independence was led by Nana Sahib of Bithoor at Kanpur. It ended in the 'Massacre of Kanpur' or 'Bibighar Massacre'. There are several cotton mills and leather tanning units in Kanpur. The city is also famous for the educational institutions like Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Agriculture College, National Sugar Institute, Government Textile Institute and Indian Institute of Technology. Among the important places to visit in Kanpur are the Shri Radhakrishna Temple, Pathar Ghat, Valmiki Ashram, Jain Glass Temple, Allen Forest Zoo, Moti Jheel Park, Gurudwara Banno Sahib, Green Park Stadium, Temple of Hanuman, Kamla Retreat, Nana Rao Park, Buddha Park and All Souls' Memorial Church. The Shri Radhakrishna temple, popularly known as JK Temple, has been built keeping both ancient and modern styles. This temple is dedicated to Lord Radhakrishna, Lord Ardhnareswara, Lord Lakshminarayana, Lord Narmadeshwar and Lord Hanuman. Valmiki Ashram is located on a hill and it is believed to be where Goddess Sita, stayed during her exile, giving birth to her twin sons Luva and Kusha and also disappearing into the Earth, when Lord Rama requested her to return. Patthar Ghat, built by Tikait Rai, is situated on the banks of the River Ganges. Made up of red stone, this ghat has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Allen Forest Zoo, popularly known as Kanpur Zoo, comprises of a natural lake and forest. This zoo was found by Sir Allen, who was a botanist as well as a member of the British Indian Civil Service. The zoo houses animals like White Asian tigers, rhinoceros, Asiatic lions, cheetah, hyena, leopard and jaguar, black bear, grizzly bear, sloth bear, monkeys, langoor, chimpanzees, baboons, musk deer, and orangutans. Another attraction of the zoo is the botanical garden. Kanpur has its own airport at Chakeri, which is situated a few kilometers from the city centre.
