Vijayawada, located at the tip of the Krishna Delta is the third largest city of Andhra Pradesh in south India. Surrounded by the Budameru River on the north and the Indrakiladri Hills on the west, Vijayawada is an ancient city. The literal meaning of the word Vijayawada is ‘Place of Victory’. There are many legends surrounding the origin of the name. A popular legend tells us that the city was named Vijayawada when Lord Shiva blessed Arjuna on the Indrakiladri Hills. Another legend says that Goddess Durga had rested here after killing a demon and as she was victorious or ‘Vijaya’, the place got the name Vijayawada. According to the Vishnu Purana, it was King Madhava Varma (the ancestor of Poosapati Kings), who built the kingdom of Vijayawada and constructed the temple of Kanaka Durga at Indrakiladri. The Chalukyas of Kalyan and Krishna Deva Raya had also ruled over Vijayawada in the ancient times. Apart from that, it was also an important religious centre of the Hindus and Buddhists.
