Diu is located on the west coast of India in the union territory of Daman and Diu. The Battle of Diu or the Second Battle of Chaul took place near the port of Diu in 1509. The Portuguese victory resulted in the colonization of Diu and it was a Portuguese colony until 1961 when it was occupied by the Indian military. It is one of the least populated districts in India. It experiences a warm and humid climate for the most part of the year. Gujarati, English, Portuguese and Hindi are some of the languages spoken in Diu. The Diu Fort was completed in 1541 and is located on the coast of Diu. It is one of the most important monuments left behind by the Portuguese. Tourists from around the world come to marvel at this large and imposing structure. There are many canons and iron shells in the fort which are well preserved. The fort was fortified to withstand siege attacks and played a significant role in the occupation of Diu by the Portuguese. The Gangeshwar Temple is a temple devoted to Lord Shiva and is located at about 3 km from Diu. It is situated near the sea shore. The most notable feature of the temple is the Shivalingams that are found amidst rocks washed by tidal waves. The locals believe that this is the place where the five Pandava brothers worshipped Lord Shiva during their exile. The temple is visited by both tourists and devotees. The Ghogla beach is not one of the most popular beaches on the coast of Diu but it is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches here. It is gradually gaining popularity among tourists as it is well organized. The beach provides opportunities for various sports activities. Parasailing and water bikes are popular fun activities here. The clear waters are ideal for bathing and the place is also known for Dolphin sightings. Many tourists come here to enjoy the serene and natural beauty of the place. The St. Pauls Church is another important monument in Diu. The construction of the church began in the year 1601 and was completed in 1610. The church was built by the Portuguese and it is one of the three churches built by Portuguese that still function in Diu. The church is often cited as an example of Baroque architecture of the late 16th century. The church is an architectural wonder and is visited by many tourists from around the world. These are only some of the many places to visit in Diu. Some of the other tourist attractions include Nagoa beach, Jallandhar beach, Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary, Diu Museum and Chakratirth beach.
