Guwahati is famous for its religious places, green hills and beautiful surroundings. The history of Guwahati dates back to the epic times. Guwahati is the largest metropolis in the northeastern states. Guwahati, an important town in Assam, is the erstwhile capital of Assam. This city is also known as Pragjyotishpura (The light of the East). Brahmaputra River flows through the city which divides the city into half. Located in the Kamrup district, Guwahati is famous for its tea plantations. The city was ruled by Ahom leaders and Mughals had tried to invade Guwahati around 17 times. This is the main hub for cultural activities in the northeastern states.Some of the major festivals celebrated here are Bihu, which is the national festival of Assam, BahagBihu, KangaliBihu and BhogaliBihu. Guwahati offers a lot to the historians as the city has several archeological sites, historical monuments and museums. The Important Places to Visit in Guwahati are Kaziranga National Park, Kamakhya Temple, Navagraha Temple, Assam State Museum, Guwahati Planetarium, Pandu, Assam State Zoo, Basistha Ashram, Bhubaneswari Temple and Tawang. Kaziranga National Park, near Guwahati, is a famous national park with several rare animals and birds. This park has found a place in the World Heritage Site. The park is spread over an area of 450 sq km and is known for breeding and habituating the one-horned rhino. Kamakhya Temple is situated on the top of Nilachal Hill which is situated at a distance of 7 km from Guwahati. The main deityof the temple is Goddess Shakti or Kamakshya. Navagraha Temple is situated on the top of Navagraha Hill. This temple is dedicated to the nine planets. This temple was constructed in 1751. One of the other Places to visit in Guwahati is the Bhubaneshwari temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhubaneshwari, which offers afantastic view of the whole city. The marvelous view of the sunset on the Brahamputra River from the hill attracts many tourists. The Guwahati Planetarium is also a favorite place for tourists who visit the state of Guwahati. Sky watching sessions and special shows projected on a dome shaped overhead screen are the main attraction of the Planetarium. Assam State Museum, operated by the Assam government, is a popular spotwith a collection of antiques back to the prehistoric times. Weaving technique and musical instruments are displayed here. Assam Zoo has a lot of animals and birds of rare varieties. Guwahati Hotels include all types of hotels from cheap hotels to mid range hotels to luxury type. The best time to visit the city of Guwahati is from October to April. Guwahati can be reached by all modes of transport like air, rail and road.
