The word Srinagar literally means 'the city of wealth & abundance' in Sanskrit. Believed to have been founded around 150 AD by King Pravarasen II, Srinagar is placed along the banks of the River Jhelum. A land of lakes, Srinagar is replete with lakes like Dal, Nagin and Anchar among others. Just watching the glittering waters of these water bodies reflecting the sunshine presents one with a heavenly feeling. Srinagar is one of the most beautiful locations of India and it is often considered as the embodiment of romance as well as natural beauty. The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is rightly placed at the heart of the Kashmir Valley. There are many places to visit in Srinagar. The most prominent one among them is the Dal Lake. The brightly coloured fine-looking houseboats sailing along the scenic Dal Lake against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayan Mountains gives Srinagar a charming feel. An ancient city that was in existence for more than 5000 years, there is a plethora of places to visit in Srinagar. These places can be broadly classified as Historical & Cultural like the Pari Mahal (or Quntilon) and the Sri Pratap Singh Museum, sites of natural beauty like the Dal Lake with its countless Houseboats, Mughal Gardens, Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi Garden, Nagin Lake, Shikara Ride and Wular Lake among others. All these places are frequently visited by the tourists and are included in the must see and must do activities in the itinerary of a tourist visiting the place. Apart from all these sites, there are many religious places to visit in Srinagar like the Dastgir Sahib Shrine, Hazratbal Mosque, Jamia Masjid, Khanqah of Shah Hamdan and the Shankaracharya Temple among others. People from various walks of life come here to pay their respects at Srinagar according to their religious beliefs. Almost all the tourist spots in Srinagar offer Lake side views and splendid sunsets. The floating markets, verdant greenery, authentic Kashmiri cuisine & hospitality of the locals are the added attraction in Srinagar. Often called the 'Paradise on Earth', Srinagar attracts people from all over the globe. Some of the popular activities to undertake while on a visit to Srinagar are enjoying a memorable Shikara ride on the Dal Lake, praying at the Shankaracharya temple, undertaking some shopping expeditions for the famous Pashmina shawls and Kashmiri handicrafts, to name a few. Besides, it is considered as the best place in India to undertake some adrenaline pumping activities like skiing, trekking, white water rafting, paragliding, camping and Kayaking among others.
