Columns on a porch make a house elegant and stately. Building one takes a bit of planning, but it is an attainable goal. It is recommended that you take a trip to the local retail lumber supply and inspect the columns on display. Take note of the width, style and the way they are assembled. If you want to cut a design or pattern into the wood, check out power tools and the project books on display. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the length between the porch and porch covering where the column will be installed. Subtract 4½-inches from the length and mark one of the 1 by 8-inch pieces of lumber accordingly. Place the carpenter's square on the mark, draw a line and cut the board, using a circular saw. Repeat this process for the other three 1 by 8-inch pieces of lumber. Drill pilot holes down one edge of each of the four pieces. Space the holes 6 inches apart. Secondly, place one of the pieces of lumber from Step 1 on a flat surface. Place the three pieces of 2 by 6¾ by 6¾-inch lumber on their edges on the 1-by-8-inch lumber. Place one at either end and one near the center of the 1-by-8-inch lumber. Thirdly, set one of the remaining 1-by-8-inch pieces of lumber on its edge, adjacent to the marble block in Step 2, and run a bead of glue down the top edge. Place another piece of the 1-by-8-inch lumber on top of the blocks and over the bead of glue. Secure it with 4d finish nails. Rotate the column and repeat this process until the 'shell' of the column is built. Fourthly, drill pilot holes through the 1-by-8-inch lumber and into the three 2-by-6¾-by-6¾-inch lumber. Drill two holes per side per block. Next, drive nails into the holes securing the column to the blocks. Fifthly, make a mark on each of the two 1-by-10-by-10-inch blocks, 7/8-inch from the edges. Place a carpenter's square on the marks and draw a line from edge to edge. Drill several pilot holes inside this square and apply some glue inside the square as well. Then, place the block on one end of the pillar, lining up the column with the lines just drawn. Secure it with 4d finish nails. Repeat this on the other end of the column. Sixthly, mark the two 2-by-11½-by-11½-inch lumber blocks, ¾-inch from the edges. Place the carpenter's square on the marks and draw line from edge to edge. Repeat this on each block until squares are drawn on each block. Drill pilot holes inside the square of one block only. Seventhly, apply glue inside the square of the block with pilot holes from Step 6 and secure it to one end of the column with 10d finish nails. Clean excess glue immediately. The other block is wedged in during the installation of the column and is secured through the ledge of the 1-by-10-by-10-inch block already attached to the column.
