Durgapur is a city in the Burdwan district of West Bengal state in India. It is situated on the banks of the Damodar River. The city was founded by then Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The city has a rich historical past where the Mauryas, Guptas, Mughals, and the empire of Harshavardhana ruled Durgapur for a brief time. The city had infertile soil and hence no king was actually interested in ruling it for a long time. The city also had thick forests and so it was difficult to be penetrated into very easily. But a lot of recent excavations in places near Durgapur suggest that this place could have been populated by the Indus Valley Civilization. There are some interesting places around Durgapur. The Bhabani Pathak Tilla is a massive length of long tunnels starting from Durgapur and reaches up to the Damodar River. The Barrage is one another feat that tells you how the people of city fought to contain the fury of nature. Just a few yards away is the canal where the water is let out from the barrage. The Durgapur steel plant is a must visit spot. To the outside world, Durgapur is known for its Steel plant. There are parks you can visit. Troika park is a place kids will love where they can find toy trains, fun rides and some more attractions. This park also has some deer in it. Kumaramangalam park is where you will find musical fountains and boating facilities. The Deul park has a temple called Echai built 800 years ago. The Garh jungle is where Raja Surath found this place and this is one of the ancient places where Durga puja is performed during Dasara and this is where Durgapur got its name. The main industries here are Steel and Ancillary, port and locomotives, dairy, and oil refineries. Bengali is the official spoken language here and but Hindi and English are spoken here.
