Aligarh was called as Kol before the 18th century. Aligarh was ruled by the Rajputs, Mughals, and Jats. Since a lot of Buddhist relics were excavated, Aligarh seems to have been the seat of Buddhism too. The Aligarh University was built by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875. It became the official seat of learning by the 1920s. Aligarh is best known for its lock manufacturing industry and it has one of the oldest and largest learning centres in India.
