Aligarh, is a district in the Northern part of Uttar Pradesh

Travel & Tourism
Aligarh was called as Kol before the 18th century. Aligarh was ruled by the Rajputs, Mughals, and Jats. Since a lot of Buddhist relics were excavated, Aligarh seems to have been the seat of Buddhism too. The Aligarh University was built by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875. It became the official seat of learning by the 1920s. Aligarh is best known for its lock manufacturing industry and it has one of the oldest and largest learning centres in India. Aligarh is a district in the Northern part of Uttar Pradesh and is very close to New Delhi. The Aligarh Muslim University is also known as the “Mecca of Education”. Lock manufacturing is being done here for decades. Aligarh is situated on a Doab between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Aligarh is an important agricultural trade centre. It is known for its tomatoes, sesame seeds, dry fruits, groundnuts, coir products, rice bran oil, and Hydrocloids (thickening agent used in food). The must see places in Aligarh are the Aligarh Qila, Baba Barchi Bahadur Dargah, Dor fortress, Chacha Nehru Gyan Pushp, Sir Syed Academy Museum, Maulana Azad library, and so on. Aligarh Qila is one of the oldest forts and is on a polygonal base. Built in the 15th century, it has broad channels around it and it is considered one of the strongest forts. The dargah of Baba Barchi Bahadur was built 600 years ago known for communal harmony. Khereshwar temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, has beautiful metallic mural carvings on the ceilings inside the temple. There is a small pond and a lot of fields all around that make this temple a must-visit. Teerthdham Mangalayatan is a vast Jain religious pilgrimage center for Jains that spans 80,000 square yards. This area consists of the Mahavir temple, Bahubali temple, Bhagwan Adinath temple, and Bhagwan Adinath Swami Manstambh. The Manstambh (votive pillar) is erected in Songarh. At the bottom of the pillar, there are chitrapats of Tirthankars, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and Munirajs. Above these, a Jain temple is carved that shows Lord Adinath in all four directions sitting on lotus flowers. The climate in Aligarh is tropical humid influenced by monsoon. Summer heat can soar up in May. Winters are mild with occasional fog. The language spoken here are Hindi and Urdu. You can buy sherwanis, kajaks, kachoris, and dry fruits from Aligarh. This city is well connected by buses, trains and flights. The local transport here consists of tempos, rickshaws and buses.
