There are four major types of human tissues that include epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous. Apart from these four types of major tissues, there are many sub-tissues that each of these tissues contain. Human tissues can be used for a variety of medical practices and research. This has made the medical community sit up and take notice. As a result, a lot of research is being conducted everyday throughout bio-medical communities all over the world because of the availability of human tissue these days. In a number of countries there are many legalities and restrictions regarding human tissue and organ usage for medical research. So, initially, much of these experiments and research are conducted on animal organs and tissues. Only once the research is in its developed stages, that they are conducted on human tissues. Even then, there is a dearth of human tissues required for medical research throughout the world. There is in fact, never enough to meet the needs for research purposes. Under such a situation, the medical industry introduced the concept of the tissue bank. The purpose of the tissue bank is to store tissues after an operation has been performed or a biopsy has been conducted or by even preserving the remaining blood, once a blood test has been done. Of course, the tissues and the blood can only be saved if the donor agrees to it. However, such an effort is laudable as it creates a surplus of tissues required for medical research. Such human tissue banks have been established in many countries and their job is to find, preserve, treat and supply human parts that have not been kept aside for transplantation purposes. Often such parts are considered as sanitary wastes but it is from these parts, that the much needed human tissues can be obtained for medical research. The process of finding, preserving and treating these human parts has to be done following the strict guidelines laid down by the World Health Organization. Supply of human tissues will aid the process of research and finding of cures of many diseases that ordinary people are fighting all over the world.
