Guntur, known as “City of spices” and is one of the districts in Andhra Pradesh. Guntur is the fourth largest city in Andhra Pradesh. Guntur was known as “Garthapuri” meaning the city surrounded by ponds. Guntur is a place of both historical and agricultural importance. Prati Palaputra was the first kingdom of Guntur, South India and its history dates back to the 1100 CE. The remnants of this kingdom are the famous Amreswaraswamy temple and the Maha Chaitya Stupa. This stupa has teachings and the life led by Gautama Buddha. The stupa itself was built in 2nd century B.C. This stupa now has a museum within it that contains the old monuments, terracotta antiquities, and a pictorial depiction of Buddha’s life and teachings. Mangalagiri is one another place of religious and historical importance. It is the shrine of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy and this temple was built in the 15th century BC by the Vijayanagar empire. Be sure to buy the hand woven colourful cotton Mangala Giri sarees from this place. Uppalapadu village near Guntur has a reputed bird sanctuary where spotted billed pelicans and painted storks migrate from Siberia and Australia every year. Kondavid Fort is another historical place present in the Kondaveedu village and was built by the Reddy dynasty in the 13th century. Kondavid is a hill fortress built with granite blocks and is at a height of 320 metres. The fort has lot of granaries, magazines, wells, and warehouses. There are 3 ponds from where the water is supplied. If you are tired of temples and forts and want to see some water, head straight to Nagarjuna Sagar dam. This is a large masonry dam was built in 1967 and is 490 feet tall. The waters of this dam had submerged the erstwhile Nagarjuna Konda, an ancient Buddhist settlement. More than 30 odd Buddhist monasteries, artworks and important sculptures were excavated and relocated. The Undavalli caves are an example of Indian rock-cut architecture. These caves are carved out of sandstone in the 5th century AD and have several temples inside it. It has some scenic green vegetation surrounding it. Guntur is one of the most fertile areas in India. Cotton, tobacco, and chilies are the largest commodities that are exported from Guntur. The spicy Sannam variety of red chilies is grown here. Telugu and Urdu are the widely spoken languages in Guntur. October to February is winter and therefore the best time to visit Guntur. The climate is of tropical type. Summers can get extremely hot.
