Vadodara is one of the prominent cities in the state of Gujarat. It is located in Central Gujarat and is a fertile plain area. It is the third largest city in the state and also is the most populated with a population of more than 4.5 million. Vadodara is the administrative headquarters of Vadodara District and is considered an important city for trade and business. It is about 139 km from the state capital Gandhinagar and is located south east of Ahmedabad. The city of Vadodara lies on the bank of the Vishwamitri River which is named after the great Hindu sage Rishi Vishwamitra. The Vishwamitri divides the city into two physically distinct eastern and western regions. The eastern bank of the river comprises if the old city with the old fortified city of Vadodara. The city is unique in the fact that it has been known by different names over a period of time. The city was formerly known as Baroda and was the capital city of the erstwhile state of Gaekwar. Vadodara is an important historical place and the city’s origination dates back to the 9th century. It grew from a small town called Ankottaka which was a famous centre of Jainism. Some of the bronze sculptures and statues of this era can be found in the Vadodara Museum. At one point of time, Vadodara was also known as Chandanavati after its ruler Raja Chandan of Dor tribe of Rajputs. It is also known as the Sayaji Nagari, in tribute to the great Maratha ruler Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Owing to its rich past, there are quite a few places of tourist interest in Vadodara. The city is famous for its many wonderful palaces. The Lakshmi Vilas Palace is one of the famous monuments here and is one of the largest residential palaces in the world. Apart from this, the Nazarbaug Palace, Makarpura Palace, and Pratap Vilas Palace are other famous and worth visiting palaces in Vadodara. Other places of tourist interest include Kirti Mandir, Kirti Stambh, Nyay Mandir, Mandvi & Walled City, Khanderao Market,Aurobindo Ashram, Dakshinamurty Temple, Hazira Maqbara, Tambekarwada, Kala Ghoda, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery, Sayaji Baug, among others. The city experiences a tropical savanna climate with three distinct seasons of summer, winter and monsoon. Summer starts in March and continues till July. The temperatures soar during this time. The winter months of November to February are pleasant with comfortable days and chilly nights. Most of the rainfall in the city occurs during the monsoon season itself.
