Meerut has a lot to offer for the nature lover. The Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary occupies an area of 2073 sq km and a lot of wildlife species such as chital, nilgai, swamp deer, wolf, leopard, hyena, gharial and wild boar can be sighted here. One can also visit the Martyr's Memorial which is built in the memory of freedom fighters who were hanged at that very spot. Saharanpur is famous for its Botanical Gardens that are as old as 150 years. Meerut is one of the ancient cities located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city was known as Maya Rashtra earlier because it is believed that the city was founded by Maya, father- in-law of Ravana. It is located about 70 km from New Delhi and around 450 km from the state capital Lucknow. It is the second largest city in the NCR. The city has a lot of historical and cultural importance with settlements dating back to Indus valley civilizations being found in and around the city. Apart from the historical value, a large number of tourists come to the city to visit various other attractions including several churches and cathedrals like St. John's Church. The other attractions in Meerut are Vishwanath temple which is the oldest temple in the city, Dargah of Shahpir built in redstone in 1620 by Noor Jehan, Augarnath Temple also known as Kalipaltan Mandir, Jama Masjid, Martyr's Memorial, Gandhi Bagh, Shahpeer's Mausoleum, Shahi Eid Gaah, Parikshitgarh, among others. The city is one of the largest producers of sports goods, the largest producer of musical instruments in India, as well as the largest producers of bicycle rickshaw in world. The city is also an education hub in western Uttar Pradesh. It is also an important place in the defense map, being the second largest army cantonment in the country. The climate here is characterized by hot summers and cool winters. During summers, temperature reaches up to 43 °C. The monsoon arrives in late June and continues till the middle of September. Winters are quite old with sometimes the temperature approaching 0.5 °C. The best time to visit Meerut is during the months of October to May when the weather is pleasant.
