Granite countertops present a special problem when you need to clean them. Harsh cleaning products scratch and dull the surface of the granite and are not a good way to clean the stone. If you ask three different experts in the area of granite, you'll most likely get three different opinions on how to clean it. The most important thing to remember when dealing with granite is that proper care leaves the granite countertops looking new for years to come. Instructions as follows: Firstly, prevent difficult stains. Clean all spills immediately before they get absorbed into the stone. Use trivets, coasters and other protective measures to prevent damage from spills or heat. Always use a cutting board. It doesn't just help to keep the granite counter clean, but it also prevents you from gouging the granite's surface. If you prevent some of the problems, it's easier to clean tiled granite countertops. Secondly, use plain soap and water. This method is recommended by many experts, but it may leave a build-up of soap scum on the countertop and make the appearance dull. If you use soap and water, make sure you rinse after you clean it and dry it with a soft cloth, buffing away any soapy residue. Thirdly, clean the granite countertop with window cleaner. You do have to be careful with the type of glass cleaner you use. Not all are safe for use on marble, limestone or granite. Granite is a composite that has many different minerals and particles in the stone. You never know which ingredient will react to one of them unless the bottle specifically states it's safe for marble, limestone or granite. Any granite that contains a calcium base in its composite shouldn't be cleaned with vinegar. Fourthly, avoid product that contain bleach, degreasers, acids, alkaline, lemon, vinegar, orange or ammonia. Don't consider any product for cleaning tubs or tile. Grout cleaners are also too harsh. Fifthly, select product specially made for cleaning granite. A simple wipe down with hot water and a soft cloth or sponge on a daily basis is often enough to keep it clean. If you have build up or want to disinfect the countertop, use a stone cleaner or granite cleaner. Once a week you need to use this type of cleaner on the entire granite surface. Sixthly, polish your granite with a product specifically created to do this. You need to do it about every three months. Keep the color vivid at the same time by using a color enhancer or revitalizer every three months also. Seventhly, seal the countertop once a year with a granite sealer made for the job. Since any type of stone is porous and absorbs moisture that sits, you add extra protection by resealing the countertop to prevent this from happening. It adds additional protection from stains caused by spills and splatters.
