Ooty, also known as Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam, is a popular hill station situated in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. Ooty is popularly called the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’. Ooty, with its natural landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks is also famous for its tea plantations and oil extraction industry, which extracts oil from eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor among others. Though Ooty was originally inhabited by the Todas, it came under the control of the East India Company by the end of the 18th century. Currently, the economy of Ooty is largely dependent on tourism and agriculture, along with a small percentage of manufacturing industries like medicines. Kodaikanal is a picturesque locale situated amongst the Palani Hills, in the state of Tamil Nadu. Flanked by the Gundar and Parappar Valleys, Kodaikanal is located on a plateau of the upper Palani Hills, at an elevation of 2133 meters above sea level. These hills have an uneven basin in the centre, at which lies the Kodaikanal Lake – a manmade lake of around 5 km in circumference. Kodaikanal was home to the indigenous tribe of Palaiyar. Modern Kodaikanal was established by the American missionaries and British bureaucrats in the mid 1980s and then few Indians relocated here in the 20th century. A part of the Dindigul district, Kodaikanal attracts people from far and wide to it with its magnificent natural beauty and lush greenery. The distance between Ooty and Kodaikanal is around 220 km by road. It can be easily covered in a little less than 5 hrs’ time. Hence driving on one’s own is a good option to travel to Kodaikanal from Ooty, especially if one loves driving. The major towns that one passes through while travelling from Ooty to Kodaikanal are : Ooty – 52 km -> Mettupalayam – 42 km -> Avinashi – 14 km -> Tirupur – 54 km -> Dharapuam – 36 km -> Palani – 65 km -> Kodaikanal. In between there are many restaurants, eateries, petrol pumps and rest rooms for the travellers to refresh themselves or grab a bite in between.Roads are the only means of travel between Ooty and Kodaikanal, as Kodaikanal does not have airport as well as a railway station. Plenty of mini buses run to Kodaikanal on a daily basis and at regular intervals from Ooty, takes almost 8 hours to reach the destination. Apart from this many state run and private operated buses are also available to travel to Kodaikanal from Ooty.Taxis too can be directly hired from Kodaikanal and charges anywhere between Rs 4,000 to 6,000 depending upon the type of vehicle rented.
