Delhi, a part of the national capital region (NCR) is a historical city which has a rich cultural and traditional past. Delhi was the centre of power for many centuries altogether. Even during the days of Mahabharata, Delhi has been a hot-pot of power and politics. Various dynasties like the Lodhis, Mughals and even the British had made Delhi their capital. Following their footsteps, the city is serving as the seat of Indian government presently. Kashmir is located at the north western region of the Indian subcontinent. Till the mid-19th century, the word Kashmir was used to denote the geographical region consisting of the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain ranges. But today, Kashmir includes a larger area that comprises of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir (comprising of three divisions: the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh), the Pakistani-administered Gilgit–Baltistan and the Azad Kashmir provinces, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract. Initially, Kashmir was an important centre of Hinduism and at a later stage, of Buddhism. But in 1349, when Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and established the Salatin-i-Kashmir (or Swati dynasty), it marked the establishment of the Muslim rule in the region, which lasted over the next five centuries. Since 1947, Kashmir became a disputed territory and is now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China. The distance from Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) is 873 km. The time taken for covering this distance is around 15 hrs. Delhi is well connected to Kashmir valley, through Srinagar, by air, rail and roadways. The easiest and quickest way of travel is undoubtedly by air. Regular flights are operated by the Jet airways and Air India from Delhi to Srinagar and the tickets are moderately priced. The airport is located at a distance of around 15 km from the heart of the city.Travelling by train is not a possible option, as there are no railheads in Srinagar. The Srinagar railway line is under construction and once it is complete, people can travel up to Kashmir by train. Until then, they will have to get down at Rishikesh (103 km) or Kotdwar (130 km) and proceed by taxis or buses.Apart from these, overnight Volvo and semi deluxe buses are available to Srinagar from Delhi. Buses take almost 24 hours to reach Kashmir and charges around INR 1500 per person. Buses are suitable for youngsters and backpackers. Alternatively, one can hire a taxi from Delhi which charge between Rs 8,000 -12,000 for a roundtrip to Kashmir. Though costly, it is more comfortable and flexible, especially while travelling with family and friends or in a group.
