Siliguri is an important city located in the Indian state of West Bengal and is one of the prime trade centers of the state. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and is known for its tea and timber industry. The city is located at the foot of the Eastern Himalayas which forms the landscape of the place and makes it a favourite with nature lovers and tourists. The strategic location of the city makes it an entry point for the north-east region of the country and is often referred to as ‘Gateway of North-East India’. Siliguri is also quite closely located to Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Tibet, making it an important city for the defense forces. The city serves as a base of Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), CRPF, SSB and the Assam Rifles. The natural beauty of the city makes it an ideal destination for tourists. Being at the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, one can catch breath-taking views of the snow-covered peaks from Siliguri. The Balason and Mahananda are two rivers flowing through Siliguri, adding to the beauty of the place. The view of the peak of Kanchenjunga is famous from here. The place is surrounded by dense forests which are another panoramic sight that gives visitors an opportunity to have glimpse of the life of nature’s other inhabitants. The view of the agriculture flats and tea add to the beauty of the place. Apart from the natural beauty, there are quite a few interesting places to see in Siliguri. The Fulbari Barrage is an artificial water body just 15 km away from Siliguri. Here the flowing river Mahananda forms a marshy land which brings a variety of birds like Mallard, Rudy Shell, Open Bull Stork, and many more. Shorea Forest Recreation Center is a nature’s delight and is a mere 15 minutes’ drive on NH31 towards Gangtok. Gajoldoba on Tista Barrage which is about an hour drive through the Baikunthapur forests is highly cherished by bird watchers. Other places of tourist interest include Recreation Center (Madhuban), Sevoke, Kalijhora, Mongpong, Rohini, Dudhia, Panighata and Lohagarh. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and is known for its tea and timber industry Connectivity to Siliguri is quite good. The Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport, while the nearest railway station Jalpaiguri is just 8 km away.
