Owing to its flourishing diamond business, Surat is also referred as the “diamond capital of the world”. Surat is an important city located in the western state of Gujarat. The city is the administrative capital of Surat district and is considered to be one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is considered to be the commercial capital of the state and is popular for its rich traditional and cultural heritages, grand festivals and delicious cuisines. Earlier known as Suryapur, Surat is the state’s second largest city and the 8th most populated city in India. It is situated on the left bank of the Tapti River and is 306 km south of state capital Gandhinagar. Surat is well connected to the rest of the country through all major modes of transportation. Also the land is well accomplished with wide range of hotels and resorts that offer comfortable stay for tourists during their trip to Surat. Surat is known for its Surati cuisine, which includes perennial favourites such as "Ghari" (a type of sweet), Locho, Undhiyu, Rasaawala Khaman, and Surati Chinese. Unlike cuisines in other parts of Gujarat, Surti cuisine is quite spicy. Roadside kiosks, called "laaris" or "rekdis", are quite popular in Surat. Surat has a tropical savanna climate. The summer begins in early March and lasts till June, wirth April and May being he hottest months. Monsoon begins in late June and continues till the end of September.
