A wall fountain is one of the simplest water features you can add to a garden. If you have an existing wall in your backyard, such as a free-standing concrete wall or a stone wall, and you have access to both sides, you can easily create this fountain. All you need is a store-bought fountainhead and submersible water pump. Instructions as follows: Firstly, choose a location on the wall for your fountain and then dig a hole at the base of the wall directly under this spot. The hole should be as large as your plastic basin, which you will use as a reservoir. Place the basin in the hole and use a straightedge to make sure it is level with the ground. Secondly, use a jigsaw to cut a piece of metal screening that is large enough to cover the basin. The metal screening will rest on the ground over the basin. It does not need to be attached to the basin in any way. In later steps, you'll conceal the screening with colored stones and the spill basin. Thirdly, drill two holes that completely penetrate the wall. Drill the first hole at the base of the wall; drill the other at the spot where you'll hang the fountainhead. Use the straightedge to make sure the holes line up. The bottom hole should be large enough to accommodate the electrical cord and the water pump's tubing. If the tubing is two inches in diameter, use a 2 1/2-inch drill bit to create a hole big enough for both the tube and the power cord. For the top hole, just use a 2-inch drill bit---that hole will only need to accommodate the tubing. Fourthly, place the submersible water pump inside the basin. Push the pump's water tube and power cord through the bottom hole to the other side of the wall. (Make sure the cord will be able to reach a GFCI outlet or power strip.) Fifthly, drag the tubing you pulled through the bottom hole in the wall up to the top hole. Push the tubing though the top hole and attach it to the fountainhead. Install the fountainhead using adhesives or wall mounting equipment---the fountainhead should conceal the top hole. Sixthly, fill the underground basin with water and cover the basin with the metal screening. Place a small dish or spill basin on top of the screening. The water that falls from the fountainhead will hit the spill basin. As the water overflows from the spill basin, it will drip down into the underground basin where the pump is located. The pump will continually recycle the water, drawing it from the basin and pushing it up through the tube, and out through the fountainhead. Seventhly, to further conceal the metal screening, place colored rocks and sandstone on it around the spill basin. The rocks will not impede the water; it will flow through the rocks into the reservoir. Tips & Warnings When choosing a location for your wall fountain, remember that the water should flow from the fountainhead and hit the spill basin below. If you mount the fountainhead too high up, the water may have trouble reaching the spill sink & basin.
