Best Ways to Allure and Keep Viewers on a Homepage

Website Design
The sole purpose of any website is to attract viewers and keep them attracted in the hopes of converting them to customers. First impressions are a huge factor in what viewers do, so being able to provide a user-friendly, pleasant experience is important. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure that the homepage delivers on everything it should, from showcasing new and important information to providing an easy way for visitors to browse most efficiently.

  • Presence and Purpose - Every website should display the name of the organization and its reason for existence, leaving no confusion as to what is being presented in terms of brand, products and purpose. Visitors should be able to immediately know that they have arrived at the correct location to meet any needs and desires.

  • User-Friendly Design - There are so many important points regarding what makes good web design, ranging from color schemes to font faces to how images, graphics and video are used that it is impossible to list all of them. It is important to determine what constitutes good and usable web design among a community of competitors and stay within such parameters. Creating a better looking website is always the goal; however, the business type, purpose, or other main topic should dictate the direction of any creative effort.

  • Company Information - Every organization needs to provide a simple, easily located way for viewers to contact them with an adequate amount of information provided. As a minimum, there should be a contact page linked from the homepage; however, a greater avenue for the building of credibility is to provide a mailing address and phone number. With multiple ways to contact a company in plain view on the homepage, visitors tend to feel more confident in the information being provided.

  • Navigation - Clear, concise navigation in the form of easy to use menus and links is critical if the goal is moving visitors around a website. Additionally, having back buttons and home buttons on every page will increase convenience while decreasing frustration as people move about the website. Getting visitors back to the homepage as well as other important areas such as a shopping cart or product index all works to help provide a smoother user experience. A link to the site map at the bottom of each page adds convenience as well and should always be included.

  • Search - Though this may seem not worth mentioning, there are far too many websites that do not include a search function for whatever reason, which is a big mistake. Every homepage should have a search function to help viewers quickly find what is needed. Without one, users can quickly become frustrated at not being able to find what they need and leave before wasting any more time.

  • Content - Since there is only a certain amount of space available on a homepage that needs to stay focused on readability and usability, deciding what to post at this central location can be critical. Having new or important content featured can help bring attention to the latest news while still allowing for smaller headlines and links to older or less critical updates. The amount of material presented at the initial viewing location should be limited and older data should be accessible through links to archived pages and search results.

A great, user-friendly homepage is like the cover of a book sitting on a rack of best sellers. Sometimes, no matter how good the story is, if the cover is unattractive the book will be ignored. So it is with the homepage of a website; if it is not very user-friendly, viewers will not remain. A homepage must be attractive, user-friendly and informative, providing the opportunity for a website to attract visitors and retain them online long enough to search and find something of interest!
