Tile and wood flooring are both popular flooring options for apartment buildings, commercial buildings and homes. Wood flooring can be used in almost any area of a home, but does not withstand water over extended periods of time. Instead, homeowners often choose to place tile in bathroom and wood flooring in other rooms of the home. Matching the height of tile and wood flooring will allow you to walk over the two flooring types without noticing the height difference. Instructions as follows: Firstly, remove the old flooring and prepare the subfloor for the tile. Remove protruding staples, nails and carpet padding stuck to the floor with a hammer and pliers. Vacuum the floor. Secondly, measure the height difference between the subfloor where the slate tile will be located and the wood floor. Ideally, the height difference will be about ¾ inch. Make adjustments to the height of the subfloor ¾ inch below the wood floor. This may not always be possible, but in some cases, you may be able to screw ¼ inch plywood sheeting to the flooring to make the adjustment. Thirdly, measure the area for the subfloor. Use the measurements to mark and cut pieces of cement backer board to fit over the subfloor. Fourthly, spread thin set mortar over the subfloor with a notched trowel. Place the cement backer board on top of the mortar. Screw the backer board into place with exterior grade screws and a screwdriver. Spread fiberglass mesh tape and thin set mortar to connect the seams of the backer board. Let the thin set mortar dry overnight. Fifthly, dry fit the tile on the cement backer board. Place tile spacers between the tiles. Choose a tile layout. Mark the floor around one or two marble tiles so you have a good idea of where to begin tiling. Remove the tiles. Sixthly, spread thin set mortar on the cement backer board with a notched trowel. Press the tiles into the mortar. Set tile spacers between the tiles. Make necessary cuts to tiles with a tile saw. Fit the limestone tile as close to the wood flooring as possible. This will ease the transition between the two flooring types. Allow the mortar to dry overnight. Seventhly, apply grout to the tile joints with a grout float. Remove the excess grout from the tiles with a damp grout sponge. Eighthly, install a flooring threshold. Measure the wood threshold and cut it to size on a miter saw. Screw the threshold into place with a screwdriver. If the two floors match up well, you may not need to install a threshold.
