Marble is an excellent choice for an elegant-looking shower. Each piece is a work of art, having formed in the depths of the earth with its own unique color, grain and texture. Not only is marble beautiful, but it lasts virtually forever--just look at ancient Greek and Roman construction and you'll know that's true. The determined do-it-yourselfer will discover that the joys of a shower tiled with marble far outweigh the challenges of getting it done. Instructions as follows: Firstly, lay all the marble tiles out in a dry, warm, clean area. Paint the faces of these tiles with marble sealer. This will prevent the pores in the marble from absorbing grout and dirt. Secondly, make sure the shower walls are square and covered with concrete backer board. Level the sink & basin, if necessary. Mark a grid on the walls with a chalk line, the height and width of your marble tiles. Mark full tile dimensions from the most visible bottom corner. Check that lines are level, but do not straighten lines if it will cause you to make extra cuts. Thirdly, apply mastic or thinset to the lowest row of tiles, with the notched trowel. Set spacers about every four inches along the top of the shower basin. Press marble tiles into the adhesive, beginning in the visible corner with full pieces. Place tile spacers at the tile corners. Fourthly, cut the end piece in the bottom row on the first wall with a wet saw. Complete the bottom row around the shower basin. Return to the starting corner and continue applying adhesive, marble and spacers, row by row until you reach the top. Cut notches for plumbing in the marble with the wet saw or nippers, cutting pieces in half if necessary to make holes in the center. Allow the adhesive to dry overnight. Fifthly, remove all spacers. Mix grout and apply it with a rubber float, pushing hard into the grout joints. Do not grout the corners, around plumbing or where the tile meets the shower basin. Wipe the grout off the tile faces with a wet rag, being careful not to press too hard into the soft grout joints. Clean the tiles in several stages. Repeat several times, using a slightly drier rag each time. Gently shape the grout joints with the rag and your finger. Let the grout dry overnight. Sixthly, apply silicone caulk to the corners and the joints where the tiles meet the bathroom basin. Dry overnight. Seventhly, apply grout sealant with a small paintbrush, wiping off any drips that get onto the marble tiles. Dry for one hour, then apply a second coat. Mount all shower fixtures. Let the sealant dry overnight, and you are finished. Tips & Warnings You may take the marble pieces to a professional tile setter if you want holes drilled in the pieces for plumbing, instead of cuts. But the rough parts of your cuts, when done right, will be hidden behind the escutcheons (cover plates).
