Even though media reports say different, the luck of the Irish is still intact. All Irish eyes are just smiling in recognition of the Harbour Bar in Bray, County Wicklow, which is considered to be one of the most famous in the area as well as in the whole world. The bar is a family-owned business which after having been voted became the number one overall “Best Bar in the World”. The survey was done by Lonely Planet, it was its well-known “Great Bars of the World” survey, which that year was sponsored by Singha Beer. According to bars reviews, the Harbour Bar is one of the oldest, as well as one of the most well-known and storied bars in Ireland. It is located across from the Harbour; the spot is about 20 km (12 mi) south of Dublin on the east coast. As it was already mentioned the bar is a family business, and it is necessary to be added that currently it is run by the third generation. The Harbour Bar was started by the O’Toole family in 1931, when the pub itself dates back to far mid of 1800’s. Can you imagine? The bar's General Manager is Colin O'Toole whose mother and uncle own the bar. During one of the interviews Colin O’Toole said, “When you consider the sheer amount of bars in the world, we are really delighted to hear this. If the walls could talk, the stories they could tell.” He honored their customers by the next words: “Our customers are the best! We take pride in offering a wide and varied set of entertainment to everybody within a unique traditional setting. And even better it puts Bray in the international spotlight.” As bars reviews state and visitors prove, the bar is always amazingly crowded and looks very unique at the same time. It is littered with original antiques and interesting bric-a-brac, which were collected over 80 years, and that was done by 3 generations of the O'Toole family. The Harbour Bar gives its customers a truly authentic Irish pub experience. It is kind of a total antidote to the sterile atmosphere of some modern pubs. There are all grounds to say that the Harbour Bar is the original model for all the worldwide “Irish” super pubs. For the last century the Harbour Bar has become home to national as well as international writers, actors and filmmakers as well as musicians. Such famous people as Brendan Behan, James Joyce (who just once preferred to live across the road), Neil Jordan, Lawrence Oliver, Peter O’Toole, Katherine Hepburn as well as U2, Bono, Sinead O’Conner, Mary Coughlin, Def Leopard, Cillian Murphy, Audio Fiction, Shane MacGowan, Brendan Gleeson, Ian Harte, Beverly D’Angelo, Jim Sheridan, and Irish artist Rasher are just a few of the bar's regular customers. Every Thursday and Saturday night a traditional Irish band plays in the bar. In addition to that the bar also offers the best live indie band venue south of Dublin. These things and not only makes it really attractive, unique and valuable for visitors.
