The real question is, how safe is the use of cell phones in our daily living? Undeniably, modern people need more advanced technology to make lives easier, such as computers and cell phones. But with these technological advancement in communication, can these devices really help us or harm us? You need to know what is going on when you take calls using your iPhone 4 or your BlackBerry. Recent studies show that there is a direct relationship between certain type of brain cancer, particularly glioma, and radiation being emitted from your cell phones, regardless of brand and cost. Scientists and cancer research authorities have found out increased risks for heavy users of cell phones. According to the study, participants who are suffering from either glioma or acoustic neuroma, another type of brain cancer, have been using cell phones for at least 30 minutes a day for the past 10 years. Heavy use of cell phones may have caused an increase in brain cells activity such as changes in DNA and neurological hormonal changes which led to brain cancers. One of the first scientists who made a statement about the safety of using cell phones was Dr. George Carlo. He was one of the pioneers in research focused on impacts of electromagnetic fields of cellular devices in 1990s who also tried to publicly warn cell phone users of the dangers of cell phone radiation and its potential hazards to human body. Consequently, Dr. Carlo was criticized for his warning words as the cell phone industry deemed it a threat to the telecommunication business. In the early 1990s, there was a lawsuit filed by a certain businessman alleging that his wife died due to brain cancer caused by cell phone radiation. After that, the cell phone industry established a non-profit organization tasked to determine the extent of impact of cell phone radiation on human brain. This organization was called “Wireless Technology Research” and it was headed by Dr. George Carlo. Research efforts were focused on addressing questions about the safety of cell phone use. Originally, cell phones were developed for the military purposes of the Department of Defense of United States of America. These cell phones were never tested in terms of radiation hazards, and particularly their effects on human health. Subsequently, according to CNN reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) made a statement about the safety of using mobile phones most especially when traveling away from cellular towers. WHO mentioned in one of its publications that the farther away from cellular base stations or cellular towers the cell phone user, the greater the power to transmit data or information is exerted by a cell phone. Result: greater radio frequency electromagnetic fields and more radiation. This is more harmful to health than just sending a text message. According to assessments of research panels who attended in the latest WHO meeting in 2011 in France, radiation emitted from cell phone can increase the risk for brain cancers for dangers of cell phones, thus classifying such carcinogenic impact as Group 2B or “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. Although no current studies can explain the mechanism behind the process by which the human brain undergoes changes in DNA due to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, the team of 31 scientists
