When Angela Thomas last saw her brother Robbie alive, he wasdrinking some beer with friends by the railroad tracks. "He said, 'I'm fine sister, I'll be OK sister.' I said, 'Callme if you need me,'" she said. "He was happy the wholeevening, just making everybody laugh, just being Robbie." Two hours later, Angela said she and her mother were awoken with aphone call from RCMP. In a news release, police said they were called to a field on thePelican Lake First Nation at about 6:30 a.m.
Saturday. Robbie had been hit. He was unconscious and not responding to CPR. He was declared dead at the scene.
Robbie had escorted his relative Robin Thomas to her graduationfrom Pelican Lake First Nation high school, and was carrying on thefestivities into the wee hours of the morning when the fightoccurred, said family members. Eighteen-year-old Jay Thomas, Robbie's cousin, was taken intocustody and later charged with second-degree murder. He wasscheduled to appear Monday in North Battleford provincial court. But Robbie's mother Denise said she can't understand how the youngman could have allegedly beaten her 6-foot, 23-year-old son.
She said there are no words to describe her loss. Denise considered Robbie her miracle baby. She became pregnant withhim while undergoing treatment for cancer, and she credits him withbringing her back to health. "He gave me life.
My son, he was my borrowed angel. For 23years God lent him to me." Denise said Robbie was an exceptional athlete and excelled at golfand hockey. "When he made up his mind to do something, it got done,"she said. Despite his size, Denise said Robbie was still her baby. "He was my baby at heart, as big as he was.
He was myson." Robbie leaves behind a young daughter, one-year-old Cienna RaeThomas, and a common-law wife, Miranda Morin. An autopsy is expected to be performed Tuesday in Saskatoon, andthe family expects to hold the funeral by Friday. Band councillor Willie Thomas said when something like this happensin such a small community, everyone feels it. "It affects everyone. Everybody cries when a young personpasses away," said Willie, Robbie's uncle.
