Mr. Bryson, who joined the cabinet last fall from the electricutility Edison International, where until 2008 he was chiefexecutive, was on personal time with no security detail at the timeof the accidents. He was driving alone in his own vehicle Saturdaynear a home he owns in San Marino, Calif. Mr. Carney demurred when asked whether the president was aware ofany prior medical problems before nominating Mr. Bryson to acabinet post. "I can tell you that the president nominatedSecretary Bryson to serve because he felt he was capable of doingthe job. And he has been an effective commerce secretary since hewas confirmed," he said. Mr. Bryson wasn't cited or detained in the accidents. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department earlier on Monday saidMr. Bryson was a suspect in a felony hit-and-run accident but latersaid health-related issues were being checked as part of theinvestigation. An individual would be charged with a felony hit-and-run if theincident involved injuries, according to Pauline Panis, a sergeantwith the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. A misdemeanorcharge would apply if damage occurred only to property, Ms. Panissaid. Felony charges would be unlikely "if a seizure is determined tohave contributed to the accident," said Margarito Robles, alieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Policealso said there was no indication alcohol or drugs played a role. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the White House is "obviouslyconcerned about the incident, concerned about Secretary Bryson'shealth-related issues that played a role in this incident, andwe're still gathering information about it." Mr. Carney said WhiteHouse Chief of Staff Jack Lew spoke to Mr. Bryson Monday morning. White House officials also wouldn't provide further details. Mr.Carney deflected a barrage of questions at a daily briefing,referring reporters back to Commerce. Mr. Bryson was driving a Lexus in San Gabriel when he rear-endedanother car as it stopped to await a passing train at about 5:05p.m. He spoke with three male passengers in the car, then left thescene, hitting the same car again, police said. Police were called after Mr. Bryson drove away from the firstcrash. The three males followed Mr. Bryson and alerted authorities. Fiveminutes later, after having driven about two miles, Mr. Brysonstruck a second car occupied by a man and a woman in neighboringRosemead, police said. After that collision—from which hedidn't flee, police said— Mr. Bryson was found unconsciouswhile sitting in the driver's seat of his vehicle. Mr. Bryson gave the commencement address last week at PolytechnicSchool in Pasadena, where his children attended. Mr. Bryson is one of the most recent appointments to PresidentBarack Obama's cabinet, having been sworn in last October. Besideshis tenure at Edison International, Mr. Bryson is a former chairmanof BrightSource Energy Inc., the recipient of a $1.6 billion loanguarantee for solar energy won after an intense push by the companyin 2011. Mr. Bryson's confirmation was held up for nearly five months. Sen.James Inhofe (R., Okla.), who had held up the confirmation, saidhis emphasis on clean energy would damage U.S. businesses.
