Direct mail campaigns that are well planned and thought out can be effective, despite the fact that we live in a digital media world. They have the ability to capture the attention of their intended audience. People will sit up and take notice of what they are reading. They will process the content before them and commit themselves to the message that is being conveyed. From there, the call to action underlying the campaign will be put into motion.

If direct mail campaigns are executed properly, they act as excellent marketing tools for small businesses trying to get off the ground. There are no hard and fast rules about how to make the design a success or to guarantee that every person contacted will respond. But they can be effective if the marketer does certain things to benefit his or her cause.

When it comes to direct mail marketing, you want to stand out from the rest. Be as personal as possible and make sure that you personalize the content that you send out. With all that the technology behind digital print has to offer us, it is a simple process to tailor your work to be a perfect match for the recipient.

Being too vague or sending something in a generic fashion will not get you the response you are looking for. Use the name of the recipient on the mailer. If you are targeting a specific business, use the business name. Make sure you get the spelling correct. Any other pertinent information that you have available to you about the recipient should be used where applicable. Customize the letter and it will get noticed.

Your call to action is important and it needs to have a narrow focus. Do not be all over the place with your message or you will confuse and/or overwhelm your audience. Be blunt and concise about what you want to convey, but do so in a classy and eloquent fashion that draws people in.

You want the direct mail piece to make sense and not be too busy. Keep it simple and to the point. Do not clutter it up with too many words or phrases and keep your colors, pictures and designs to a minimal. Make sure it all looks tasteful and is appealing to the eye. You want your call to action to have focus and emphasis. It also must support the idea or theme that the piece is about. Do not start with one thing and end up somewhere completely different. This will cause the item to lose credibility with its readers.

Tracking performance matters. Once you have found an effective means of tracking the performance of the piece, you then must test and measure what is working in the campaign and what is not. Certain elements will be more successful than others. Find out what they are. To do this, ask the recipients how they learned about you or request that they enter a special code.
