Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) President Laurie Fenton-Ambrosepredicted that because of major breakthroughs this year inscreening, treatment and research, 2011 will be defined as theturning point year for lung cancer . "To paraphrase Churchill, this is not the end but it is certainlythe beginning of the end," she said, "and 2011 will be rememberedas the year that finally changed the course of lung cancer and ledto thousands of lives being saved." Topping the list is the scientific validation of CT screening forlung cancer, a major breakthrough that was also cited by theAmerican Society of Clinical Oncologists and primary care doctorsas one of the three most important medical breakthroughs of 2011. Within months of the release of the CT screening data, the NationalComprehensive Cancer Coalition, a consortium of the nation'sleading cancer centers, issued new guidelines with the highest level of consensusendorsement. Four weeks later, WellPoint, the largest commercial health insurerin the country announced coverage for CT screening for those athigh risk for lung cancer. Lung cancer research received another boost when additional federalfunding was secured for the Department of Defense's lung cancerresearch program, bringing the total secured by LCA to date to $58million. On the treatment front, the Food and Drug Administration approved anew drug, Xalkori , that targets lung cancer tumors in patients with a specificmutation in the ALK gene. "We are seeing progress on all fronts and now the linking of acontinuum of care research, early detection and treatment," saidFenton-Ambrose, predicting that screening will stimulate moreresearch and new approaches to identifying those at risk, preventing and treating lung cancer, more effective smokingcessation protocols and a better understanding of other causes oflung cancer. The series of breakthroughs that occurred this year led toincreased coverage by the media and greater public understanding ofthe impact of lung cancer the leading cancer killer in the UnitedStates and worldwide - the increasing number of never smokers beingdiagnosed with lung cancer and the need to address lung cancerprevention, early detection and treatment simultaneously. Fenton-Ambrose also noted an increase in the number of national andinternational lung cancer Shine a Light vigils and events held thisyear reflected the growing public involvement. Finally, bipartisan legislation introduced in both the House orRepresentatives and the Senate earlier this year has now beenco-sponsored by 27 senators and 47 representatives and is supportedby 60 medical organizations, institutions, women and minorityhealth groups and military and veterans' organizations. Thisdiverse group of public health and policy leaders is expected togrow in the year ahead. "This has been an extraordinary year," concluded Fenton Ambrose,"and one for the history books. As we look ahead to 2012, we willcontinue to build the movement, bring hope to those with lungcancer and those at risk for the disease.".
