Tips on Avoiding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Health
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome happens when there is excess squeezing or pressure on the median nerve in the wrist and hand. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be a very painful condition causing wrist pain, burning or tingling in the fingers, gripping problems, and sensory issues. If it goes untreated it can lead to surgery, or even muscle loss in the hand and in the wrist. There are many causes ranging from genetics and obesity to injuries and physical joint stress. Repetitive daily movements are the most common cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and it is most commonly found in factory line workers and in women.

There are many steps that need to be taken to help relieve stress on the wrist and arm joints, and also to help prevent ever fully developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The first long-term step is daily low impact exercise to help reduce extra weight that may be causing stress on joints. Having a healthy body weight can help relive many aches and pains including the wrist and finger pain that is caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Another great way to help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to maintain correct posture, especially when siting at a desk or performing repetitive motions for long periods of time. By eliminating strain on the neck and shoulders it also helps prevent problems from arising in the arms and hands. Always use each hand, wrist, and arm evenly. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often arises in only one wrist or hand at a time and by using both sides evenly it dramatically reduces the stress on each joint. Also make sure not to grip items too tightly, this can cause additional pressure on the median nerve and can easily lead to fully developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Another great way to help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from developing when in a work environment that requires many repetitive movements, is to wear a wrist brace.

It is very easy to find wrist braces made specifically for people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and many are adjustable to fit any size, so they still support where they need to but allow movement as well. An additional method to prevent developing the syndrome is to stretch arm, wrist, and hand muscles prior to beginning strenuous work. Many companies are now scheduling a stretch time for workers, to aid in lowering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome rates. Also, remember to take frequent breaks from any repetitive activity, including leisure activities that might not seem as strenuous as working at a computer or in a factory, but can still be damaging to wrist joints. Something to keep on hand that helps to relieve wrist pain and finger pain, is anti-inflammatory medication. By following dosage limits the medication helps reduce the actual inflammation, therefore relieving many symptoms. Finally, the number one tip to preventing and treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to visit a licensed bone specialist for specific information on your case that may be crucial to preventing the syndrome from fully developing.
