The UPSC conducts a number of examinations in India for all the top government posts in the country. Some of these exams include the Indian Economic Service examination and the Geologist Exam. If you are a graduate in statistics or economics from a recognized university in India you may consider a career in the IES. The successful candidates can then join the government services as a class A officer. Such candidates are recruited as officers in the Planning Board, Planning Commission, National Sample Survey and Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as in various Allied departments and offices where specialists are required in the fields of statistics and economics. The IES officers are specialists in the mold of administrators. Through the exam for the Geologists the UPSC recruits in two different categories. One is for the various posts in the GSI or the Geological Survey of India and the other one is for different posts in CGWB or the Central Ground Water Board. The UPSC Indian Economic Service examination is conducted each year. There is a written examination which is followed by the all-important interview. There are five different papers in the written examination with a total of 900 marks. The various papers include the General English paper, general studies; two papers in General Economics and finally an Indian Economics paper. Three hours are given for the completion of each paper. The questions are asked in an essay type pattern. The age criterion for sitting for this exam is between 21-28 years. In order to sit for the Geologist Exam conducted by the UPSC the aspirant must hold a Master degree in Marine Geology/Applied Geology/Geology. For a post in the Geological Survey of India the candidate may also have a Mineral Exploration, Master degree. For the Central Ground Water Board posting a Hydrogeology Master degree is the criterion. Also aspirants holding an Associate Diploma in Applied Geology from Indian School of Mines situated at Dhanbad are also eligible to sit in this Geologist examination.
