The Gateway of India is built from yellow Basalt and concrete. Constructed in a novel architectural form that combine the Roman and Gujarati style of architecture, the Gateway of India stands as a perfect blend of the Hindu and Muslim architectural forms. The arch is in the Muslim style of architecture while the decorations are in the Hindu style. The central dome is 48 feet in diameter and 83 feet above the ground at its highest point. On each side of the arch, there are large halls that can hold six hundred people. The construction of the monument was supervised by the government engineers of the Bombay Province under the charge of Late Deewan Bahadur Kikkeri Ramaswamy also known as Bombay Ramaswamy whose name is imprinted on the monument in honor. The Gateway of India in Mumbai, the capital city of the state of Maharashtra, is located on the Apollo Bunder area in the south of Mumbai which was built at the times of British Raj by the British. The fishing community who lived in the area during ancient days, made use of the Gateway of India as a crude jetty. This 26 meter high monument is an arch made of Basalt. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Gateway of India lies at the end of the Chattrapathi Shivaji Marg at the water's edge in the harbor of Bombay. It was used as a landing place by the British after its renovation and would have been the first thing to see on landing in Mumbai. Mumbai city’s Top tourist attraction, Gateway of India is sometimes referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai due to this. King George V and Queen Mary visited India in 1911 and the monument was built to commemorate their visit. Gateway of India is built in the Indo-Sarcenian style of architecture. Design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The gateway later acted as the ceremonial entrance to India for the British Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. During earlier years, it served as the entry point to India. There are five jetties at the Gateway of India. The first jetty is exclusive to the Atomic Research Center, the second and the third are used for commercial ferry operations, the fourth is closed and the fifth is exclusive to the Royal Bombay Yacht Club. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation conducts an Elephanta Festival of music and dance at the Gateway of India, replacing the venue from Elephanta Caves for convenience.
