On the face of it, working from the comfort of your own home is everyone’s idea of a dream job setting. There is no overbearing boss to work with, no incompetent co-workers with annoying habits and you make your own rules. They are, of course, the major plus points of taking your work away from the typical office environment and into your home. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that working from home is what it’s all cracked up to be in fact, in most scenarios, it can be quite mind numbing and de-motivating. Here are five reasons why working from home is a bad idea. 1) You’ll Lack Authority Providing that you’re not attached to any particular company, working from home could well mean that you are now your own boss. Yes, in theory, this sounds like an excellent idea but the harsh reality is that it doesn’t always pan out like you’d think or hope. No boss means no authority. No authority can cause your standards to drop significantly and your productivity can only suffer as a result. 2) There Is No Social Interaction Providing that your home alone for most of the day, working from home will mean that you’re social interaction (no, not Facebook) will decrease substantially. There’ll be nobody to talk to and after a while you’ll be desperate to have your incompetent co-worker back alongside you. Annual Christmas parties can also be a lonely affair. 3) Too Many Distractions When it comes to an everyday office environment, the biggest distraction you’ll get is some background radio and an occasional browse through YouTube videos while your boss isn’t looking. Making the transition to your home will open up a whole host of new distractions and that’s never a good thing if you actually want to do any work. Television, video games, Facebook, Twitter, watching paint dry you name it, it becomes interesting, and distracting. 4) You Start Dressing and Looking Like a Tramp Working from home means no dress code – and you’re not going to get suited and booted for a 9 to 5 stint in your own home, are you? Similarly, your general appearance is going to take a turn for the worst. Showers become far from a necessity and there’s no point trimming that hair. 5) People Will Think Bad Of You Seriously, if you’re somebody who is the slightest bit bothered by what other people think then don’t work from home. For some, any association to the word “home” means you’re not really working. Perhaps they’re just jealous. Probably.
