Home to a rich biodiversity and a wide range of flora and fauna, the island of Sri Lanka offers countless hours of exploration and adventure for nature lovers. Within the country you will find a variety of protected nature parks which give you a chance to experience firsthand the stunning natural heritage of Sri Lanka including its exotic wildlife. One of the best experiences one can have here is by taking an elephant safari in Wasgamuwa National Park. Located in the districts of Polonnaruwa and Matale, the Wasgamuwa National Park is a protected reserve that was set up to offer sanctuary for the wildlife that were displaced due to the Mahaweli Development Project in the mid 1980's. The name Wasgamuwa has been derived from the joining of two words; "Walasa" which translates to sloth bear and "Gamuwa" which is in reference to wood. Covering an area of approximately 36,900 hectares, the park is bounded by the Mahaweli River and the Amban River. While Wasgamuwa National Park is where one will find 23 mammal species, the most popular amongst these are the Sri Lankan Elephants. There are around 150 elephants at the park and those embarking on an elephant safari can witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat as they roam the scenic landscapes. The best time for a safari is generally during the periods between November and May, since at other times the herd tends to migrate to the nearby parks of Minneriya and Kaudulla. As you journey through the park you will come across a variety of other animals as well. On your safari you may see such creatures as the endemic Toque Macaque along with such animals as the Sri Lankan axis deer, water buffalo, wild boar, mugger crocodile and water monitor. If you are lucky you just may get a chance to see the elusive Sri Lankan leopard as well. The area is also popular amongst bird watchers since there are about 143 species here including endemic varieties. The yellow-fronted barbet, the Sri Lanka junglefowl, painted stork and the Eurasian spoonbill are among the bird species one may catch a glimpse of while on a safari. Those planning to make day excursions to the park can stay at a Sigiriya hotel such as Jetwing Vil Uyana. Offering elegant Sigiriya accommodation, this property also makes an ideal base from which to visit the famous Lion Rock fortress. Google+
