FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 10, 2012 Contact: John Canning, President Phone: 802.735.0840 Three Vermont schools are recognized for their outstanding programsthat prepare students for careers in Science, Technology,Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics May 9, 2012 The Vermont Software Developers Alliance (vtSDA) ispleased to announce the first winners of the Bentley Awards. Theprogram was initiated in memory of 12 year old Bentley DavisSeifer. Bentley, the son of a founding board member of the VermontSoftware Developers' Alliance, had a knack for creatinginventions out of found objects and a strong interest in science,engineering, art and math. The projects recognized will help tohonor the spirit of invention and ensure students are prepared fora future of constantly changing technology and advancements inscience. The vtSDA received twenty-one outstanding applications. Afterreading all of the applications, the judges were overwhelmed withthe quality of the work being done around the state. Theapplications were so inspiring that the vtSDA was able to raise anadditional $20,000 for awards from the community. The vtSDA raisedenough money to fund three projects and to provide an iPad to eachof the remaining eighteen applicants. Each of the three winnerswill receive a check for $3000, 3 iPads, and a $100 gift card foreach iPad to purchase applications. The three winning applicants are: Mt. Abraham Union High School – Bristol –Integrated STEAM project – Teachers: Tom Tailer, PaulStetson, Jim Brown Hinesburg Community Middle School – Astronomy classes– Teacher: Angela Galyean Grafton Elementary School – Geocaching – Teacher:Beth Ann Drinker In reviewing the applications, the vtSDA learned that Vermont sschools are home to some of the most creative and innovativeteachers in the country. They care about their students and knowwhat they need. To prepare students for the ever changing world,teachers and schools working with all ages of students have addedSTEAM programs to the curriculum. Bentley Davis Seifer, the 12-year-old child of Bruce Seifer andJulie Davis died on July 12, 2011, while enjoying the naturalsurroundings of Bolton potholes. Bruce was a founding member of theVermont Software Developers' Alliance and both Bruce andJulie were very supportive of our mission and member companies.Bentley was a very inquisitive child, with an outgoing nature. Heloved the visual arts almost as much as he enjoyed taking apart andrebuilding machines and robots. The Winning Proposals: Mount Abraham Union High School, Bristol Proposal: Integrate physics, industrial technology and CAD Produce tangible student projects using computer modeling,graphic design and computer- controlled fabrication. Projectsinclude a low-cost pellet stove for heating, wooden-trussstructures fabricated with a computer-controlled router, and sportsequipment. – Tom Tailer Hinesburg Community School Proposal: iPads to teach astronomy My sixth-grade science classes focus on the solar system. TheiPads provided by the Bentley Award would augment our currentcurriculum, thanks to the many wonderful applications that helpstudents understand the solar system and the night sky. –Angela Galyean Grafton Elementary School Proposal: Geocaching Geocaching is an adventure game for GPS users where students willset up caches all over their community and then share theselocations on the internet. Many people here are working hard to puttogether a seamless summer school/summer food/summer camp programfor our students for the very first time. Not only will thegeocaching project itself be a great addition to the program, butit may draw in some students who might not otherwise come into townto get a healthy lunch or come to summer school to get in someextra math and reading practice. – Beth Ann Drinker The runner up, the Struggling Readers program at Burlington HighSchool, will receive funding to purchase fifteen eReaders for theclassroom. I am thrilled beyond belief at the generous award! said Sharon Weltman, the reading teacher. Technology is great butnever cheap so the increase in funding really makes a hugedifference in my ability to purchase multiple eReaders for myclassroom! eReaders assist her students by defining words andpronouncing them. The vtSDA would like to thank all of the donors that supported theprogram, especially the Vermont EPSCoR program which provided overhalf of the additional funding.
