For most of us the reality of noise is with us. Many UK homeowners and businesses are looking into soundproofing to address this and finding a good quotation is a key first step. For many the cost of such a step is an unknown but how can you get a quote you can rely on? Here are a few simple pointers. a) Make sure you know what you're heading for. For many the solution is sound reduction rather than sound removing. Take some initial advice about what this might mean. What sort of sounds are you reducing? Sound travels through the air but also through vibrations so think about walls, ceilings floors and windows. Then consider your space - the size and shape may dictate what solutions you need. Finally what's your outcome? Soundproofing for the neighbours or to create a quality recording space - these are two very different animals. Soundproofing a noisy boiler or industrial machinery again will require very different solutions. A good tip is to consider your questions and problems, not so much the solutions available. b) Do your research. Most quality suppliers will have a good website with a comments or questions section. Given the variety of work these firms do it's unlikely you'll present a situation they haven't seen before. One good tip is to look at who they've worked for any testimonials. If there are any stories of their work nearby why not go and take a look? c) Consult planners and planning regulations. Whatever work you do will need to meet Building Regulations. Make sure you have good information about your location when you approach suppliers - where you are, dimensions, neighbourhood etc. Home or office requirements for acoustic treatment will be very different. Take some photos of the site if you can. d) Match like for like. When you do get quotes, go to a few suppliers. Commercially three quotes are often required to show value for money so this is a healthy rule for anyone. Make sure you're comparing the same things - what costs are hidden and what's included? Suppliers may offer different solutions to your problem but at least make sure they're all on level ground. Whatever your soundproofing need, there are suppliers on hand with experience and know-how to solve your problem. A good quotation will set you at ease, allow you plan and mean you're on your way.
