Dubai and Turkey benefit from the disruption of regional tourism

Travel & Tourism
Turkey and Dubai city emerge as the main beneficiaries of the decline in tourism in the countries of the Arab Spring, according to professionals involved this week in a salon trip.

Tunisia and Egypt have experienced a decline in attendance due to the violence that accompanied the protests that ousted in January and February 2011, the leaders of the two countries, according to these professionals.

In contrast, the city state of Dubai and Turkey has benefited.

Turkey hosted 1.4 million Arab tourists in the first eight months of 2011 against 1.2 million in 2010. Their total number should reach 1.7 million for the year 2011.

"The number of Egyptian tourists from Turkey increased by 400% in 2011," said Ahmed Youssef, a senior company Amadeus, a provider of information technology for tour operators to illustrate the phenomenon of changes in the regional tourism map.

Dubai has experienced in 2011 an increase of 10% hotel occupancy with 9.09 million tourists and revenues of $ 4.4 billion, up 20% compared to 2010, according to figures released during the Arab Salon Trip .

Dubai expects 10 million tourists in 2012. A goal to reach as arrivals rose by 9% in the first quarter to 2.6 million, according to statistics released this week.

"Tourists seek safe destinations in addition to quality service," said Khaled al-Mazroui, director of the airport Foujaïrah, one of the components of the federation of the United Arab Emirates.

Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports chief, spoke up tourists accustomed to Egypt as the Saudis and Kuwaitis. Flights to Dubai are available from every part of the world.

"There has been redistribution (tourists) during the past months," he told reporters, speaking of "a leap in the number of tourists (arriving in Dubai) from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, "as well as other Arab Gulf countries.

Dubai with its leisure and commerce is attracting family tourism and shopping, according to participants at the show.

With large hotel infrastructure, modern airports and luxury shopping malls, the city reaps the rewards of a strategy to make it a tourist destination foreground.

For the entire region, tourism has had a bad year in 2011. "Overall, the Middle East and North Africa have experienced a drop in attendance, including Tunisia and Egypt," noted Ahmed Youssef Company Amadeus.

According to statistics from the World Tourism Organization, published in March, the number of tourists in the Middle East fell by 8.4% in 2011 to 54,800,000, after an increase of 14.9% in 2010. In North Africa, the decline was 9.9% with 16.9 million tourists after rising 6.5% in 2010.

The tourism sector has declined from 41% in Syria, 32% in Egypt, 31% in Tunisia, where it contributes to GDP by 7% and 24% in Lebanon.

This sector has declined from 16% in Jordan in the first seven months of 2011. Tourism contributes 14% to the GDP of this country. For Accommodation Hotels in Dubai are very easily available. Tourists from the world book hotels for their stay in Dubai. Click here for Flights and Hotels in Dubai
