Situated near the Sukhna Lake, the garden consists of man-made interlinked waterfalls besides many sculptures that have been made of scrap and other kinds of wastes like bottles, glasses, bangles, tiles, ceramic pots, sinks and electrical wastes. Rock Garden, spread over an area of 40 acres in Chandigarh, is completely built of industrial and home waste and the thrown-away items. The garden, work on which was started in 1957, is also known after its founder Nek Chand, a government official. Nek Chand began collecting materials from the demolition sites in his spare time. He selected a gorge near Sukhna Lake and recycled the waste materials there away from the eyes of the government officials. It was a government land and it was illegal to work there. Nek Chand was able to hide his illegal work for 18 years before it was discovered by the authorities in 1975. By the time it was discovered, it had grown into a 12-acre complex of interlinked courtyards, each filled with hundreds of pottery-covered concrete sculptures of dancers, musicians and animals. In the beginning his work was in serious danger of being demolished. But he was able to gain public opinion in his favour which helped him salvage his efforts. At last the park was approved by the government. It was inaugurated in 1976 as a public enterprise. Nek Chand was given a salary, a title (sub-divisional engineer, Rock Garden), and a workforce of 50 labourers so that he could concentrate full-time on his work. There are 20,000 rock forms in the Garden now. Nek Chand’s efforts received recognition when the Rock Garden appeared on an Indian stamp in 1983. Things are still being made out of recycled materials in the Garden. Chand was able to set up waste collection centres around the city with the government help. The Rock Garden Society is the administrative body that looks after this unique enterprise. Nearly five thousand people visit the garden daily. A total of more than 1.2 crore people have visited the garden since its inception in 1976. Chandigarh, state capital of both Punjab and Haryana, is located on the fringes of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. It is the main hub from where the tourists travel to the Kullu and Manali hill stations. After the partition of India, Punjab required a new state capital. In the beginning American architect-planner Albert Mayer and then the famous French architect Le Corbusier designed the new city of Chandigarh. In the centre of the Capital Complex in Chandigarh is the giant metallic sculpture of the Open Hand, the official emblem of Chandigarh.
