How to Play the Energy Companies at Their Own Game Energy prices are just about set to go through the roof – again. But what can we do about it? Well, there are several options at your disposal. Get Political Join or form a lobbyist group and put pressure on the government using political lobbying. Or, for those with less free time, simply write a letter to your local MP – this won’t have a great effect – unless we all do it – but if we do, eventually the politicians (who are there to serve us never forget…) will have to listen to us for fear of saving their jobs. Get Online Start an online campaign, many Utilities (if not all) companies have a Facebook and twitter page – so why not try bombarding them with messages – these companies will do almost anything to avoid bad press. Make sure your argument is well structured and without swear words, and you can actually have an effect on their policies. Alternatively you can post a blog online. If your article/post gets picked up by an RSS feed (news feed) then your story could go viral and perhaps do some real damage to the reputation of the companies which are literally profiteering from other people’s misery. Get Switching One of the most direct methods of teaching the ‘fat-cats’ a lesson is to strike where it really hurts – in this case their weak spot is their profit margins. The more business we take away from the big players the more they will be forced to lower their rates and profits. It’s quite possible to find out who is the cheapest option in your area using the internet or even by phoning round – however by far the easiest method is to use a price comparison site like uSwitch or similar. Currently the cheapest option in most areas is First Utility. Why is all this so important? There are several reasons – the first and most obvious is that you will probably save money on your own bills. That’s a big fat incentive right there! However, there are also other reasons - the main one being that we need to show these fat-cats that we're not going to let them play us any more - and the best way to do that is take our business away from them.
