Ajmer is known for its interesting history. About 140km away from Jaipur, Ajmer is situated in the midst of the Aravalli range on the slopes of Taragarh hills. The entire city is being guarded by the Taragarh Fort, which is one of the oldest forts in the country. Climbing up to this fort provides a breathtaking view of the entire city. Ajmer city was ruled by Chauhan Rajput till the 12th century until Prithviraj Chauhan an lost Ajmer. Ajmer has gained its importance for religious purpose. The famous Dargah Sharif and the Pushkar lake both are situated right here. Dargah Sharif resting place of Sufi saint Hazrat khwaja moinuddin Chisti is visited by thousands of devotees of all religion. During Festival season the place gets more crowded as devotees offer their prayers to the saint for fulfilling their wish. Pushkar the famous Hindu pilgrimage. The town is 11 km away from Ajmer and it is situated surrounding the holy lake which was said to have formed when Brahma dropped a lotus flower. There are about 52 bathing ghats and it is known as the Tirtha Raj in ancient Hindu scripture and the area hums with slacks and regular pages. There are very few Brahma temples in the world, and Ajmer is one of them. A brahma temple made of marble is situated near the pushkar lake.It is said that brahma along with other goddess performed their yagnas here. Beside all these regious sight you can also visit Anasagar a beautiful artificial lake is popular for outing and picnic.The Ajmer museum is also an interesting place for a visit as this was the residence of Akbar which has now been transformed into museum.It has collection of unique armour and sculptures from Mughal and rajput era. Besides visiting the Pushkar and Dargah Sharif take a walk outside the mosque on the crowded city road. There are many café shops and restaurant where you can sit and enjoy sufi and Qawwali. The city gets lively during the festival of Urs or Pushkar fair. With folk dance, poetry reading, Sufi music and dance shows.
