Remember as a kid when you would sulk over losing a game with siblings and friends? This was followed with the complaint that rules of the game don’t make any sense and that some of them are biased. Well child or adult, everyone likes a fair play. This is why the popular card game rummy has set rules that govern the game. Some rules of the game may appear odd and are followed as rituals, but there is certainly a reason behind doing so. Many of us are practicing them considering it to be an integral part of the game, but it is really important to know why they were established in the first place. This may seem like an unusual practice but will only help to understand the game better – |
Here’s the logic behind the different rules of rummy –
Determining order of play by randomly drawing cards To many it may seem a little absurd that drawing cards can determine the order in which players will avail their chance. In reality this aspect of rummy is the only one that is left to chance. This is mainly done to peacefully decide the order of the game, as many times it may happen that disagreements and arguments may occur even before the game has begun. This creates negative environment and many times the game could get over even before it begins. Also, a mutually agreed order of sitting and playing may prove unfair to some of the participants.
Leaving an open card after dealing of cards After the cards are dealt and the remaining cards are stacked for all to pick from, one card is left open and placed before the deck. The probable reason for doing this may be to give the player taking the first chance and advantage to choose between an open card or pick a card from the stack. This exercise is not just advantageous for the player who goes first, it also helps the other participants to judge the kind of cards he has seeing whether he picks an open card or not.
Picking a card and then discarding one This is one of the most logical rules of rummy. If this rule would have been in the reverse order i.e. throwing a car before you pick one, the game would completely be dependent on chance giving the player no scope for using his analysis and skills to convert the hand dealt to him into a winning meld.
Option to leave the game This rule again reinstates that rummy remains a game of skill rather than chance. This helps the player to ensure that the upper hand he may have gained is not lost in case the cards got in the current game are not up to the mark.
Condition that you cannot use Joker unless you have a natural run A joker is a wild card that can change the direction of the game for the players. So if any player has too many jokers then it proves unfair to the rest of the players. Hence, conditions are applied to the use of joker in the game of rummy to restrict such unfair advantage.
