The medical condition known as rheumatoid arthritis has a severe affect on the joints making them rigid, inflamed, red and warm to touch. This inflammation is often experienced in joints on each side of the body in areas such as the knee, wrist, hands and ankle – yet essentially any joint can be effected. This problem is generally seen to arise in people over the age of fifty years but in some cases, children have also been found to suffer from it also. The disease is called an Autoimmune disease, meaning that the body’s immune system is not behaving correctly and is actually destroying ‘healthy’ or ‘good’ tissues rather than keeping the body safe from foreign bodies. The disease affects about 1% of the population and is found in women twice as often as in men. Avoiding arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis induces a severe pain in the joints. The cause of occurrence of this disease is medically considered as unknown, yet theories have been put forward for decades that it may be caused by viruses, fungi or bacteria, or even that it may be a genetic disorder carried over from a person’s earlier generations or even long periods of antibiotic use. But there are some factors that equally affect the suffering resulting with the disease. Being overweight is one such factor which has an intensive effect on rheumatoid arthritis pain. This is mainly due to the load on the joints, which increases with body weight, and thus contributes to greater pain. Naturally, it is beneficial to a sufferer to have a lower body mass index to reduce pressure and inflammation in effected joints, especially lower joints such as the knees, ankles and metatarsals in the feet. There are a huge number of rheumatoid arthritis remedies stated to be very effective but none of them claim to a 100% cure. However, maintaining the body weight is a good start and it just so happens that a diet that is rich in anti-inflammatary foods like root vegetables and fruits are also foods that allow for easy weight loss. Studies have also shown that smoking tobacco also increases the risk of this disease. Despite the difficultly in quitting smoking, it is much more difficult to live a life in server RA pain! So every effort should be made to eliminate smoking altogether because RA is such a serious disease so lifestyle improvements such as quitting smoking are a no-brainer to eliminate or reduce pain. A recently discovered fact about rheumatoid arthritis is that the risk of developing this disease may reduce to some level due to a regular exposure to sunlight. A detailed study and a number of experiments performed over women belonging to different age groups derived the result. However, it was determined that the effect of exposure to ultra violet B sunlight rays is more evident in older women. The possible reason behind this may be as the younger women are more concerned about the ill effects of sunlight such as skin darkening and other skin issues and thus, they tend to use sun block lotions or keep their skin covered from the sun.
