Curtis Awards Dinner atthe Hilton Hotel in Burlington. The dinner and speaking order beginat 6:30 PM. Also to speak are Governor Peter Shumlin, CongressmanPeter Welch, Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Patrick Leahy. This year s Curtis award recipients reflect the broad spectrum ofDemocratic activist, from a statewide elected official tograssroots organizers. The award winners are: Secretary of State Jim Condos has served Vermont and his communityfor over 20 years as, among other things, a City Councilor, StateSenator and in 2010 was elected as Vermont's 38th Secretaryof State. He is a champion of transparency in our elections andstrong campaign finance laws. Carolyn Prasch of Grand Isle served on local, county and statecommittees in Vermont for 21 years and recently retired as GrandIsle County Chair. She played an essential role in the continuedgrowth of the Democratic Party in her region. Linda Weiss, of Corinth, currently serves as Chair of the OrangeCounty Democrats and Treasurer of the VDP. She has fulfilledcountless roles and has worked tirelessly for over a decade tostrengthen the VDP statewide. David W. Curtis was the Chair of the Democratic Party from 1997 to1999. He was a tireless champion of gay rights, women s issues andthe legal rights of the poor. Before there was a Roe v. Wade, Davidsuccessfully argued the Vermont Supreme Court case establishing aVermont woman s right to choose. Before there were civil unions,David served as co-council on Vermont s landmark case securingadoption rights for gay couples. As a prominent public official anda person living with AIDS, David chose to be visible. His testimonybefore Congress helped secure reauthorization of Ryan White fundingfor HIV/AIDS in rural communities. Through his words and deeds,David helped articulate a positive vision for Vermont Democrats.
