New Delhi Railway Station is the major railway station in the capital city. The long stretch of the platform built at the time by the East India Company, between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj in 1926 marked the beginning of the station. It is one of the oldest and the second busiest rail station in the country. It manages over 300 trains in a day, which includes trains originating from the station as well those which en route via the Delhi station. The station has 16 platforms and 18 tracks. The railway authorities also provide ample parking space for private vehicles on making a nominal payment. The station code for the Delhi station is NDLS.

The railway station is centrally located at a distance of 2 km from Connaught Place in the City Business Center. The station holds a world record for maintaining and operating the largest interlocking system. There are several steps taken by the Government to modernize the railway station with sophisticated technology that can benefit the passengers. Some of the major long-distance trains that originate from Delhi are Bhopal Shatabdi Express, which is the fastest train in India, Mumbai Rajdhani, Tamil Nadu Express, Kerala Express which is the longest running train in the country, Sampoorna Kranti Express, and so on.

The Delhi Junction Railway Station in Old Delhi is the oldest rail station in the capital city. It was built in 1864 and renovated in 1903. The electrification in the station was done in 1967. The station is vast with 18 platforms. The Old Delhi station is a look alike of the historic Red Fort. The station handles more than 200 daily trains and nearly 200,000 commuters. It is a Junction where trains from five directions connect. The trains from Ghaziabad and Shahdara from the East, Ambala in the North, Kishanganj and Shakurbasti from the Northwest, Sarai Rohilla from Southwest, Okhla and Nizamuddin from the South. The station code for Old Delhi Junction is DLI. Some of the trains originating from the station are Jaiselmer Barmer Express, Jammu Mail, Delhi Sealdah Special, and so on.

The other major Delhi Railway Station includes Hazrat Nizammuddin Railway Station (NZM), Anand Vihar Railway Terminal (ANVT) and the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station (DEE). Some of the major trains that operate from Hazrat Nizammudin are Shaan-E-Bhopal Express, Madhya Pradesh Sampark Kranti Express, Swarna Jayanti Express, Trivandrum Central Rajdhani Express, Mangala Lakshadweep Express, and so on. The Anand Vihar station was commissioned in 2003 to serve the North-Eastern states of Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, and so on. Some of the trains that originate from the Anand Vihar are North East Express, Vikaramshila Express, Rewa Express, and so on.
