If you are planning a long road trip with young children, there are some essential things you should take to help make the trip enjoyable. A long trip in the car can be very trying for all involved; the driver, and the young passengers, if you are not prepared. Here are a few tips on what to pack for your trip. When you are well prepared, your trip will be everything you dreamed it would be. Be sure to pack your children’s favourite foods and drinks. Children benefit from frequent snacks. Stopping at roadside coffee shops or gas stations for snacks can run up a huge bill, and usually there is a limited selection of unhealthy snacks. Before you leave home take the time to fill a cooler with drinks, fruit, and snacks and include a garbage bag, paper towels and wet wipes to clean up sticky hands and any garbage. A week or two in advance ask your children what their favourite snacks are and as you buy them put them together in one place. This makes it easier not to forget things at the last minute when you are rushed. Try to make your vehicle as comfortable as possible for the trip. Pack your children’s favourite blanket, pillow and stuffed animal. Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothes. Wearing loose pants and shirts, and removing their shoes before you begin, can make the children more comfortable and less likely to be restless and unhappy. Make sure you have any emergency supplies that you may need. Pack a first aid kit with basic medical supplies like Band-Aids and any medications that your children are likely to need. For example, if they suffer from car sickness or headaches, have the proper medications to treat these ailments on hand. If you require medications while on the road, it can very time consuming to have to deviate from your route to find a drugstore. It is also a good idea to pack an emergency roadside kit, especially if you are travelling at night. A flashlight, emergency candles if it is winter, and flares are all important things to have on hand, and you will have the peace of mind that you will be prepared in case of an accident. Pack things to entertain your child. Things like children’s classic books, games, movies, and their hand held video games will keep your children busy for hours. If they are old enough to read, their favourite illustrated books or novels will hold their attention. For older children, an e-reader may be a good idea, or perhaps a tablet on which the children can watch a movie. Remember to pack chargers for any electronic items, including cell phones. It’s a good idea to make a list of all the things you may need for your trip in advance, and check off the essentials as you pack them. Getting ready for a road trip with young children can be stressful and time consuming. If you are organized and well prepared, your trip will be the relaxing and memorable family time that you hoped.
