In the current economic climate, more and more people are choosing to improve or expand their homes rather than selling their house to upgrade. Conservatories are popular additions to homes, creating extra living space without the upheaval of having a brick extension built. But although conservatories offer good value for money and usually add to your property’s equity, they can become dated or worn after several years. Modern conservatories have many benefits, including solid soundproofing, self-cleaning glass and insulation. If your conservatory is past its best, you may be considering upgrading, renovating or even demolishing it. Perhaps you had the conservatory installed originally but want an upgrade now that you have more cash; perhaps you have inherited a conservatory on buying your home and want to make it your own. Either way, if you are lucky enough to have a conservatory already but feel that it could do with smartening up, what are your options? There are several cosmetic changes you can make to give your conservatory a ‘face-lift’ and you might feel that this is all yours needs. For example, you could change the glass (from standard to self-cleaning, for example), add under-floor heating or add some decking around your conservatory to further extend your space in the warmer months. You could also install some modern technology, such as a roof vent controlled by a thermostat and rain sensor. A slightly more significant upgrade would be to change the roof of your conservatory, perhaps to make use of specialist modern glass that helps to moderate the temperature of your conservatory all year round. Many people find that their old conservatories are too hot in summer and too cold in winter: adding blinds can help, but this takes away the natural light that you probably want from your conservatory; changing the glass can be a great way of solving heating problems. If you have timber frames, they may be rotting and need a lot of upkeep that you simply would not need to tend to with a modern uPVC conservatory frame. Assuming you are happy with the shape and size of your current conservatory, you could keep your base and replace the frames with uPVC and double glazing, instantly transforming its style and getting the benefit of fantastic insulation. If you feel that your old conservatory is just too far removed from the conservatory of your dreams, you can demolish it and replace it with a totally new unit. A modern conservatory will have all the energy efficiency and insulation available, helping you to save on energy bills and enjoy comfortable temperatures all year, every year.
