China welcomes and supportsall measures that help break the deadlock of Palestinian- Israelinegotiations and restart their dialogue, Chinese UN ambassador LiBaodong said here Monday. Li made the statement while addressing a UN Security Council opendebate on Middle East. "The Palestinian-Israeli question is the core issue of the MiddleEast peace process, which needs continued attention and assistancefrom the international community," Li said. "China always maintains that the parties concerned should resolvetheir disputes through political negotiations under the relevant UNresolutions, the principle of 'land for peace', the Arab PeaceInitiative and the Middle East Roadmap for Peace with the goal ofultimately establishing an independent Palestinian state and twostates, Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace," hesaid. China welcomes the efforts made recently by Palestine and Israel toresume the peace negotiation, and hopes for positive progress to beachieved in this regard as soon as possible, said Li, adding thatChina hopes the Quartet on the Middle East will continue to promotePalestinian-Israeli dialogue and play a bigger role in supportingthe settlement of the UN Security Council on Middle East problem. Li noted that the Israeli settlement is a major obstacle for theresumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiation. "China is always against Israeli establishment of Jewishsettlements in the occupied Palestinian territory," he said. "Weurge Israel to cease the settlement construction immediately, workactively in collaboration with the efforts of the internationalcommunity to promote peace, and create conditions for theresumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiation." He also urged Israel to quickly and completely lift its blockadeagainst the Gaza Strip so that the people of the Gaza will regain anormal life, dignity and development space. On the Syria-Israel and the Lebanon-Israel issues, China firmlysupports the just cause of Syria and Lebanon to maintainsovereignty and territorial integrity, and recover their occupiedterritories. China supports the strategic choice made by Arabstates in their pursuit of a comprehensive and lasting peace in theregion, said Li. On the Syrian crisis, the Chinese ambassador said it can only besettled in a fair, peaceful and proper manner through an inclusivepolitical process led by Syrians on the basis of respect for thesovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity ofSyria, and respect for the choice and will of Syrian people. He called on all parties of Syria and the international communityto support and coordinate with the work of the Joint Special EnvoyKofi Annan and that of the United Nations Supervision Mission inSyria.
